Vol. 145 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Treatment of Cattle in Transport.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, having regard to the recent statement of the Irish Livestock Exporters' Association that Irish cattle were neglected and subjected to cruelty when being transported by British Railways (London Midland Region), he will indicate what steps he proposes to take to ensure that such an undesirable state of affairs will not be permitted to continue.

Mr. Walsh

The statement referred to by the Deputy related to rail transport of cattle in Britain, which is governed by the British Transit of Animals Orders designed to prevent cruelty to animals. This association has not made any specific complaint to my Department on which I could have official representations made to the British Ministry concerned, but I am aware from Press reports that the association has been actively pursuing the matter direct with the carriers.

In the circumstances that the Minister has been made aware, through the Press, of this campaign, does he himself propose to make any representations or take any steps in the matter?

Mr. Walsh

The association has made representations already with the people concerned. No complaints have been made officially to my Department.

Having regard to the fact that the Minister is aware of the situation——

Mr. Walsh

Through the Press only.

——does he propose to follow up the matter?
