Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na Móna Employees.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of men employed by Bord na Móna in County Offaly in each of the years 1948 to 1953, inclusive, and the number now employed.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the number of persons employed by them in County Offaly at peak of operations in the years mentioned were:—

1949

1,419

1950

1,359

1951

1,314

1952

1,434

1953

1,340

The number at present employed by the board in County Offaly is 1,070; this compares with 726 at 1st April, 1953, and 320 on 1st April, 1951.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of persons employed by Bord na Móna in each of the years 1948 to 1953, inclusive, and the number now employed.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the number of persons employed by them at peak of operations in the years mentioned were:— 1948, 4,754; 1949, 5,685; 1950, 3,968; 1951, 6,149; 1952, 7,024; 1953, 6,512.

The number employed by the board at present is 3,995, but this number will of course increase very substantially as the peak period approaches.
