Vol. 146 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Housing Proposals.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he intends to sanction the proposals of the Cork Corporation to build dwellings on the recently cleared sites in the Marsh area of Cork City; and, if so, whether he can indicate the date on which the corporation should be in a position to proceed with this work.

The proposal submitted by the Cork Corporation envisages the erection of 12 maisonettes and six flats in this central city area. The corporation were asked on 26th May, 1954, whether the town planning officer's recommendation for the planning of the area as a whole were submitted to and approved by the corporation. Further information relating to residential densities in the area was also requested. These particulars have not yet come to hand but are expected in the next few days.

I am not at present able to say when the corporation should be in a position to proceed with the work.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary think it reasonable to ask the Cork Corporation to visualise and plan for what might happen in this area in 100 or 200 years' time, before they get permission to proceed with this small scheme?

I understand the whole matter was the subject of consultation between the city manager and the Department's inspector, and the city manager promised, less than a week ago, to submit his further recommendations in this matter inside a few days.
