Vol. 146 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Housing Accommodation.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state how many families in Cork City numbering five or over are sleeping, eating, cooking and living in accommodation comprising one room only.

According to the 1946 Census, 209 families of five or more persons were, then, occupying oneroomed tenements in Cork City. No later figures are available.

Would the Minister agree that the figures should be available if the housing authority is taking an interest in the number of people who are living in one room?

The Deputy may be aware that this entire matter has been discussed within the last week between the Lord Mayor of Cork, the city manager, two other members of the Cork Corporation and representatives of the Department. As a result, it is now proposed to send two senior engineering inspectors to the City of Cork for the purpose of having a further review.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state how soon, at the present rate of building, he expects the housing needs of the applicants still awaiting rehousing in Cork will be met.

At the present rate of building it is considered that the housing needs of Cork City, as estimated by the corporation, should be substantially met within eight to ten years.
