Vol. 146 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification Scheme.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will use his good offices to ensure that the townlands of Largynaseeragh and Owenteskna are included in the rural electrification link-up at present being carried out in the Glencolumcille district, County Donegal, since these are two Fíor-Ghaeltacht townlands.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the townlands in question are included in the Glencolumcille area which has been selected for development under the rural electrification scheme. I am also informed that as soon as work in the area commences the board proposes to open a local office for the convenience of householders who have not so far had an opportunity of making application for supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is hoped to extend the E.S.B. current to Goleen, County Cork.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Goleen area which has been considered on a number of occasions for development under the rural electrification scheme has not so far been selected due principally to the small percentage of householders who have agreed to take supply. The board is unable to state when development of the area is likely to take place but suggests that a considerable improvement in the percentage of acceptances would be likely to advance the prospects of the area for selection.

Mr. Egan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when rural electrification will be extended to the Croghan district of Offaly.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that when recently considered, in conjunction with other areas awaiting development under the rural electrification scheme in the board's Athlone district, the Croghan area was not selected due mainly to the fact that as the houses in that area are somewhat dispersed, more line would be necessary to supply prospective consumers than normally would be required in the average area. The area will be considered again, but I am not in a position to state when development is likely to take place.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when an official canvass will be carried out by the E.S.B. with a view to the extension of rural electrification to the Toomore district, Foxford.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the results of a canvass of the residents of this area carried out by a local committee have been received by the board and that the area has been placed on the waiting list for investigation. I am also informed that an official canvass will be carried out when areas which have made prior application for supply have been dealt with and that it is not expected that the official canvass in the Toomore area will be commenced before next spring.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the present position regarding the extension of rural electrification to the district of Knocknagoshel, County Kerry.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Knocknagoshel area has been considered by the board on a number of occasions for development under the rural electrification scheme but has not so far been selected as its returns have not compared favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Tralee district. The area will be considered again in the near future but I am not in a position to state when development is likely to take place.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what progress has been made in connection with the provision of rural electrification for the town and parish of Kilmihill, County Clare; and, further, if he will request the E.S.B. to give immediate consideration to the claims of this area, where approximately 90 per cent. of the families are willing to avail of the service.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Kilmihill area has been considered by the board on a number of occasions for development under the rural electrification scheme but has not so far been selected as its returns have not compared favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Limerick district. The area will be considered again in the near future but I am not in a position to state when development is likely to take place.
