Vol. 146 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Borough Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state what proposals there are in his Department for the building, reconstruction and extension of schools in Cork Borough.

A new school to replace the present Glasheen Boys' National School is in course of erection and preliminary arrangements are being made for the replacement of St. Patrick's Girls' and Infants' National Schools.

Apart from this the general question of the national school requirements in Cork County Borough and its immediate vicinity is under examination in my Department. This examination includes both the question of the provision of school accommodation for the new housing areas at Ballyphehane, Spangle Hill, Churchfield and Bishops-town and the question of the replacement and/or reconstruction and extension of existing schools. As regards the provision to be made for new areas, my Department has the advice of a local committee representative of the various interests concerned. It has already been decided that new schools should be provided in the Ballyphehane and Churchfield areas, but pending the completion of the examination of the general question I regret that I am not in a position to give detailed information as to the arrangements to be made for the area as a whole.

There are no proposals before my Department for the building, reconstruction or extension of technical schools in Cork County Borough, apart from the School of Music, the construction of which is at present in progress.
