Vol. 146 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Arigna Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether the site for the proposed power station which will use Arigna coal for electrical power purposes has been decided on, and, if so, if he will state the location of such site and when it is proposed to start work on the scheme; and whether, in view of the now serious unemployment position in that area due to the practical closing of the mines, he will endeavour to have the work pushed ahead as speedily as possible.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that they have provisionally selected a site on the west shore of Lough Allen as the location of the electricity generating station to be fired with Arigna coal. The board have also informed me that they expect that work on the site will commence next spring. The board have been asked to take all steps necessary to ensure the erection of the station at the earliest possible date.
