Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayfield (Cork) School.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the cause of the delay in providing urgently needed increased accommodation in Mayfield National School, Cork.

andJ. Lynch asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that congestion at Mayfield National School is becoming daily more acute; and whether, in view of the serious danger to the health and education of the children attending this school, he will have the provision of a new school or the extension and improvement of existing accommodation expedited; further, if he will state the present position.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 19 together.

I am aware that the Angel Guardians National School, in the Mayfield area of Cork City, is seriously overcrowded. In order to provide additional accommodation two temporary wooden classrooms were erected at the school in recent years, but as the attendance has been increasing it has now been decided to erect a further temporary wooden classroom. A grant towards the cost of this additional classroom has been sanctioned by my Department and the Commissioners of Public Works are arranging for the preparation of the plans and specification. When these are ready they will be issued to the manager with the necessary instructions regarding the execution of the work. The urgency of the need for relieving the congestion is appreciated and every effort is being made to have the new temporary classroom erected as soon as possible.

The ultimate solution is the provision of a new school and steps are being taken by the reverend manager to obtain a site for the building.
