Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Meal Factory.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider favourably any proposals for the establishment of a fish meal factory at Cromane, County Kerry.

The approval of the fishery authority is not necessary for the establishment of fish meal factories by private enterprise. My Department and An Bord Iascaigh Mhara will be prepared to give the promoters of such a project at Cromane any information which they have regarding the practical problems and the economics of fish meal production in this country.

In view of the fact that the initial cost in this case would be comparatively low and also that the structure at the moment— the plant and equipment—are in excellent condition, would the Parliamentary Secretary not consider that it would be a feasible proposition to establish a fish meal factory at Cromane and possibly also an ice plant? Such a project would provide employment for a number of men in the district. For these reasons, I would ask the Parliamentary Secretary and the Department to consider this matter sympathetically.
