Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reductions in Expenditure.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Finance if he will specify the reductions in expenditure, if any, on which the Government has decided, arising out of the examination of the Estimates for Public Services to which he referred in Dáil Éireann on 15th June, 1954, and the estimated saving in the present financial year resulting from any such reductions.

A critical review of the public services is being carried out by all Departments with the object of reducing costs of administration. Until this review has been completed and, indeed, until final figures for the expenditure of each Department in the current financial year are available, it would be premature to attempt to assess the outcome.

Mr. Lemass

You would want to start saving soon or the Coalition will be over.

Do not worry about that. You will see the results in due course.
