Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor-Cycles.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the increase in the number of motor-cycles in Dublin increases the risk of traffic accidents, particularly for women and children; and if he has under consideration the making of regulations for controlling the speed of these vehicles.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of motor-cycles registered in the Dublin area in October, 1954, or the latest date for which the figure is available, and the number registered on the same date in 1953.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions numbered 68 and 69 together.

The number of motor-cycles, motorscooters and motor-assisted pedal cycles under current licence in Dublin City and County in mid-August, 1954, was 7,214, as compared with 5,262 in mid-August, 1953. There has been practically no increase in the number of the more powerful and speedy type of motor-cycle, the major increase occurring in the class comprising motor-scooters. I am advised by the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána that while the figures showing the number of motor-cycles involved in accidents in Dublin during the years 1951-53 and the first half of 1954, disclose an increase, they do not show any abnormal increase when it is borne in mind that there has been a considerable increase in the number of motor-vehicles, especially motor-cycles, licensed during the same period. I have not under consideration at present the question of making regulations for controlling the speed of this class of vehicle.
