Vol. 147 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tobacco and Lung Cancer.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that a number of medical men are of the opinion that the increase in lung cancer is directly related to the use by tobacco manufacturers of paper other than rice paper in the production of cigarettes; and if he will take steps to have the matter investigated in the interests of public health.

I am aware that it is held in some quarters that there is a relationship between certain types of cigarette paper and lung cancer, but I would point out that, apart from cigarette smoking, there are other factors which may play a part in the recent increase in the incidence of this disease.

With the realisation of a possible relationship between smoking, particularly cigarette smoking, and lung cancer, there has of recent years been a considerable amount of research into the matter in various countries and the different reports on these researches are kept under constant review in my Department. Should any definite conclusions emerge which would call for action by me, the necessary steps will be taken without delay.

As the inquiries into this matter are being actively pursued and are backed by ample financial resources and as the amount of money available in this country for medical research, which is financed mainly by the Hospitals Trust Fund, is limited, I do not consider that we should impose a further burden on this fund, the resources of which are already fully committed, by initiating a separate investigation here.
