Vol. 147 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - English Newspaper Report.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware that the Minister for Lands at a public meeting in County Roscommon, referring to a political report published in an English Sunday newspaper, is reported in a daily newspaper to have said that the Government would be forced to deal with these newspapers; and, if so, if he will state whether the Government has in contemplation, in any circumstances whatever, the introduction of a political censorship of newspapers, Irish or foreign.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, and the answer to the second part is in the negative.

Mr. Lemass

Will the Taoiseach inform the Minister for Lands of his reply to the question?

Is the Deputy able to differentiate between sensational lies and political criticism?

Mr. Lemass

Can the Minister for Lands?

I think he can.

Mr. Lemass

He is not going to suppress any papers, anyway.

Not for the reason mentioned by the Deputy.

The Deputy seems to be a great patron of the British Sunday papers.
