Vol. 147 No. 5

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Borough Boundary.

andMr. J. Lynch asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate (a) the date on which the Cork Corporation's application for an extension of the borough boundary was received, (b) the date of the inquiry, and (c) when the findings will be issued; and further, whether he is aware that severe hardship is being caused to recipients of T.B. and blind welfare benefits who have been transferred to corporation houses outside the borough.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is now in a position to issue a decision in regard to the proposed extension of the Cork Borough boundary, and, if not, when a decision may be expected.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 73 and 74 together.

The petition of the Cork Corporation for a provisional Order extending the boundary of the County Borough of Cork was received in my Department on the 21st April, 1953. Detailed documents explanatory of the proposal were received on the 9th May, 1953. The public inquiry into the petition was opened on the 12th January, 1954, and adjourned to the 26th idem when it was concluded. My consideration of the matter has satisfied me as to the necessity for an extension of the city boundary, but the accurate topographical description of the boundary requires rather lengthy examination and careful definition.

I am aware of the difference in health and social welfare benefits in the city and county. I hope that the arrangements now in train for the making of an Order and its confirmation by the Oireachtas will enable the provisions of the Order to be in operation by the 1st April next.
