Vol. 147 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare Harbour Development.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the present position in regard to the plans for developing the harbours at Liscannor, Seafield and Carrigaholt, County Clare.

A resolution passed by the Clare County Council in December, 1953, regarding the provision of an inner dock at Liscannor was referred by the council to my Department and a reply was sent in January, 1954, setting out certain particulars which the council would be required to furnish to enable the proposal to be examined. These particulars have not been received. In the case of Seafield, dredging of the berths appears to be the main requirement of the fishermen and the county council, who are responsible for the carrying out of maintenance work of this kind, have already had their attention drawn to this matter on a number of occasions by my Department. Both Seafield and Carrigaholt have been suggested by the council as possible sites for a major fishing station and all that can be said in that regard is that they will be included for examination if and when the need for such a station along that section of the western coast is being investigated. I have had no other representations in the fishery interest for developing Carrigaholt Harbour.
