Vol. 147 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Officials and Defence Service.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce proposals for legislation to provide that officers and servants of local authorities, who served in the Defence Forces during the periods (a) 1918 to 1921, (b) 1922 to 1939, and (c) 1939 to 1945, will have such service recognised for the purposes of the Local Government (Superannuation) Acts where it was rendered prior to the persons becoming officers or servants of a local authority.

I cannot undertake to introduce proposals for legislation to provide that local officers and servants may reckon for superannuation purposes service in the Defence Forces rendered before they entered local authority employment for the first time. The position of persons who were encouraged to leave local authority employment to join the Defence Forces and who returned to it upon leaving the Defence Forces, is being considered in connection with the proposed amendment of the local government superannuation code.
