Vol. 147 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the districts of Birdhill, Killoscully and Newport, County Tipperary.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Birdhill area which includes Newport and Killoscully has been considered by the board for development under the rural electrification scheme but has not been selected as its returns have not compared favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Limerick district. The area will be considered again but I am not in a position to state when development is likely to take place.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will ascertain from the E.S.B. the reason why rural electrification has not yet been extended to the Glenisland and Letter areas, Castlebar, County Mayo.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that an official canvass of the residents of the Glenisland area which includes Letter is at present in progress and is expected to be completed in time to permit the area to be considered by the board before the summer of 1955 for development under the Rural Electrification Scheme. I am not in a position to state when development of the area is likely to take place as its prospects of being selected for development will depend on how its returns compare with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Galway district.
