Vol. 147 No. 12

Supplementary and Additional Estimates. - Vote 59—International Co-operation.

I move:—

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £4,400 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1955, for contribution to the Council of Europe and the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation and towards certain projects of the United Nations Organisation; and for other expenses in connection therewith.

When I introduced this Vote on the 16th June last, I mentioned that it would be necessary later in the year to take a Supplementary Estimate for the payment of a contribution of £5,000 towards the technical assistance programme of the United Nations. I explained that a commitment had been entered into with the United Nations for payment of the contribution and that provision for the contribution had been made in the Estimate as originally drafted but had been inadvertently struck out when the Estimates were being printed.

In order to meet the commitment to the United Nations it becomes necessary to pay this sum of £5,000 now.

Since then savings to the extent of £600 are now expected to accrue under other sub-heads of this Vote. It has, therefore, been possible to reduce the sum required by that amount so that the amount of the Supplementary Estimate which the Dáil is now being asked to grant is £4,400.

Vote put and agreed to.

In regard to the two other Estimates, Votes Nos. 27 and 38, the Chair wonders could they be taken together.

Mr. de Valera

I suppose they could.

They are both of the same nature.

Agreed to take Estimates 27 and 38 together.

They can be discussed on Estimate 27.
