Vol. 148 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of New Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the present position in regard to the national schools in Castleconnell, County Limerick.

A grant has now been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of the erection of new schools to replace the present Castleconnell Boys' and Girls' National Schools, County Limerick.

It is a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to make the preliminary arrangements for the erection of the new buildings. These arrangements will necessarily take a considerable time to complete, but they will be dealt with, as expeditiously as possible, having regard to the many other cases on hands which demand attention.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is proposed to erect a new school at Boher, County Limerick, in place of the existing schools at Eyon and Kisheykirk; and, if so, whether, in view of the objections of parents to the proposal and the hardships which would be imposed on the children concerned, he will reconsider his decision and erect a new school at Kisheykirk and retain the existing school at Eyon.

Arising out of the defective condition of Eyon and Tineteriffe National Schools and the urgent need to provide suitable accommodation for the pupils of these schools, it has been proposed to erect a new central school at Boher, County Limerick, to replace the existing schools at Eyon and Kisheykirk and to replace the existing Tineteriffe National School by a new school nearer to the site of Eyon National School than the existing building.

I am aware that there have been objections to the implementation of the proposal to discontinue the Eyon and Kisheykirk National Schools which objections are at present being examined by my Department.

asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to start building the extension to Moyne school, County Tipperary.

Certain arrangements as regards the production of evidence of title to an additional plot of ground required in connection with the proposed scheme of enlargement and improvement at Moyne National School, County Tipperary, have still to be made before my Department will be in a position to sanction a grant towards the cost of the scheme. These arrangements are receiving active attention and it is expected that they will be completed at an early date. When a grant has been sanctioned it will be a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to take the necessary steps to enable the works to be carried out.

I am unable to say, at the present, when it is likely that work on the scheme will be commenced.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made towards the erection of a new school to replace the present boys' and girls' national school at Carnew, County Wicklow.

There has been difficulty in securing a site for a new school to replace the present national school at Carnew, County Wicklow.

It is hoped that it will be possible to come to a decision at an early date as to the suitability of a site which the reverend manager has offered. If the proposed site is regarded as suitable my Department will communicate with the reverend manager in regard to the remaining preliminary arrangements which will have to be made before a grant can be sanctioned from State funds towards the cost of the new school.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made towards the erection of a new school to replace the present boys' and girls' national school at Coolafancy, Tinahely, County Wicklow.

A grant towards the cost of the erection of a new school to replace the present national school at Coolafancy, County Wicklow, was recently sanctioned by my Department. It is now a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to make the preliminary arrangements for the erection of the new building. These arrangements will necessarily take a considerable time to complete, but they will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible having regard to the many other cases on hands demanding attention.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the present position in regard to the provision of new schools at Milford and Tullybeg, County Donegal

A grant has now been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of the erection of a new school to replace the present Milford National School, County Donegal.

It is a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to make the preliminary arrangements for the erection of the new building. These will necessarily take a considerable time to complete, but they will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible, having regard to the many other cases on hands.

The reverend manager has offered a suitable site for the erection of a new school at Tullybeg, but certain preliminary arrangements, which are being attended to, must be made before the Department will be in a position to sanction a grant towards the cost of a new school. The Department will endeavour to have these arrangements completed as expeditiously as possible.
