Vol. 148 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increases in Ground Rents.

asked the Minister for Justice whether, in view of the exorbitant increases made by landlords in ground rent, when leases are being renewed, and the anxiety caused to proprietors of business premises affected thereby, he will introduce proposals for legislation to amend the law in the matter.

The recommendations of the Conroy Commission for the amendment of Part V of the Landlord and Tenant Act, 1931, include a proposal that the maximum rent which may be charged on the renewal of certain long leases should be reduced. These recommendations are being examined by the various Departments and I expect that in the near future I shall be ready to take the views of the Government on the matter.

I am not in a position to say whether the cases to which the Deputy refers come within the scope of the commission's recommendations, but if she will send me particulars I will have them examined.
