Vol. 148 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kale Seed Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that seed merchants find it impossible to obtain supplies of kale seed this season, and, if so, if he will examine the possibility of obtaining alternative sources of supply.

I am aware that certain varieties of kale seed are in short supply. Both here and in the principal exporting countries production of kale seed was considerably below normal last season, due to unfavourable weather conditions. The countries from which we usually obtain supplies have restricted the export of kale seed. Licences to import kale seed are freely available, and I am satisfied that the seed importers here are taking all practicable steps to secure any supplies which may become available from alternative sources.
