Vol. 148 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation Road in Roscommon.

asked the Minister for Lands what action the Land Commission propose to take in regard to the application for the completion of an accommodation road on the Crighton estate, townland of Cuilrevagh, County Roscommon.

All the improvement works considered necessary for the resale of holdings on the Crighton estate were carried out several years ago. If the work referred to by the Deputy is beyond the capacity of the tenants, it is open to them to apply to the Special Employment Schemes Office for assistance.

Is the Minister aware that in connection with this particular estate the Land Commission made portion of an accommodation road to serve these people and that this road was never completed? Is he aware that in view of the fact that this road serves 15 people and enables them to bring carts and to carry fertilisers in order that they might do a bit of tillage, these people are now prevented from carrying out any tillage? Would he not consider that it is the duty of the Land Commission, since they started this road, to have it completed?

That road was begun by the Congested Districts Board. Several of the tenants have been vested since 1916 or 1917 and this matter has never been raised before. My information is that at the time the Congested Districts Board made the portion of the road that they considered necessary and about which no complaint has been raised up to the present day. The matter is completely outside the scope of the Land Commission.

Is the Minister aware that in 1951 application was made by the 15 people mentioned to his Department?

I am not aware of that.

Since the Congested Districts Board made that portion of that road the Land Commission divided another farm of land in the vicinity to serve seven further holders and all that was provided for these was a pass, but no road.

In that case the tenants are still not vested.
