Vol. 148 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Athlone-Roscommon Telephone Line.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the long delays which are experienced by telephone users when making calls on the line between Athlone and Roscommon, and, if so, if he will take steps to have the service improved as soon as possible.

I am aware of the delay being experienced on telephone calls between Athlone and Roscommon.

A trunk cable between the two places will be needed to eliminate this delays and a contract for the work will be placed as soon as possible.

Is the Minister aware that when I asked a similar question almost two years ago, I was informed that additional circuits for the route are included in the programme for the current financial year to solve the problem between Athlone and Roscommon? Can the Minister state the reason for the delay in remedying the position, which I was told would be solved within a few months?

Engineers are to erect an aerial cable on the road. In a few months circuits will be available. The scheme is one of magnitude, planning and design, and at this stage it is not possible to say exactly when it will be completed.
