Vol. 148 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Roscommon Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the lands of Messrs. Madden, Mulligan and Fitzpatrick, situated in Creevy, Lisacul, County Roscommon, and, if so, with what result.

The Land Commission have not considered the acquisition of any of these very small holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position regarding the acquisition by the Land Commission of the lands of Mr. Joseph Daly, Lisagallon, County Roscommon.

Possession of this estate was taken by the Land Commission on 1st December last.

asked the Minister for Lands what is the present position regarding the acquisition by the Land Commission of the O'Malley farm, Rathconnor, County Roscommon, for the purpose of division amongst deserving applicants.

The Land Commission have considered a detailed report on this estate but have not decided upon taking any action towards its acquisition.

Does that mean that they do not intend to take any action?

Would the Minister mind clarifying the reply?

They have not decided. It means they have not taken a decision yet whether they will proceed or will not proceed.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position regarding the acquisition by the Land Commission of the non-residential holding of the late Mr. Joseph Coen, Knockglass, Ballinameen, Boyle (Balfe estate).

The Land Commission have withdrawn from their proceedings for the acquisition of this estate.

Has the Minister anything to do with the Land Commission decision in that matter?

I do not think it is fair to suggest that. It would be most unfair for the Minister or any other body to interfere with the Land Commission and the Land Commission would not be fit for their job if they allowed anybody to interfere with the powers this House has given them.

Hear, hear!

That "hear, hear" business is all right until you meet an unfortunate congest down the country.

I thought more about them than you ever knew, brother.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position regarding the acquisition of the French estate in the townland of Clooneyquinn, County Roscommon.

The Land Commission are pursuing certain inquiries in relation to this estate which must remain confidential.

Can the Minister give any indication as to when these inquiries are likely to be brought to a conclusion?

No, because a certain statutory time must elapse under the Land Acts between one proceeding and another.

The Minister is no doubt aware of what is going on in this particular estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have yet prepared a scheme for the division of the non-residential farm of Mr. Charles Duignan, Clooneyquinn, County Roscommon, and, if so, when the scheme is likely to be put into operation.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have yet prepared a scheme for the division of the Farry estate in the townland of Drumsillagh, Knockvicar, Boyle, and, if so, when the scheme is likely to be put into operation.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 16 and 17 together.

Schemes for the division of these estates have not yet been prepared though I am hopeful but not certain that it may be possible to deal with the Farry estate this season.
