Vol. 148 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Veterinary Surgeon.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider appointing a permanent resident veterinary surgeon at Belmullet, County Mayo.

Local authorities, with my sanction, appoint numbers of veterinary surgeons to be inspectors for statutory duties under the Diseases of Animals Acts and for public health (meat and milk inspection) duties. The local authority veterinary inspector for Belmullet rural district resides in Ballina, difficulty having been experienced, as in the case of other outlying areas, in appointing an inspector who would reside in the Belmullet area. No change is at present practicable in the appointment for the Belmullet area, but the position will be reviewed when opportunity offers with a view to determining whether an improvement can be effected.
