Vol. 149 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Sea Wall Breach.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that several breaches have occurred in the sea wall erected by the Land Commission in 1948 at Ring strand, Ballykenneally, Ballymacoda, County Cork, that tenants on the estate were levied on their annuities for the rebuilding of the wall and that the lands of Patrick and Eileen Ryan, Ballykenneally (Record No. 4.6.11262) are almost completely inundated and rendered derelict as a result, and, if so, what steps he intends taking to have the sea wall properly repaired; and further, if he will state the amount withheld from the landlord of this estate for the repair and upkeep of the embankments, what portion of that money was expended and when, and if there is any of that money now left.

The sea wall to which the Deputy refers was erected by the Land Commission in 1937 and the tenant-purchasers then undertook to maintain it in good repair for the future. No money was withheld from the landlord for maintenance as the wall was built after the sale of the estate.

Additional assistance for repairs was later provided by the Land Commission in exceptional circumstances and portion of that expenditure was made repayable by annuity.

Although the Land Commission have no liability in the matter they are having inquiries made with particular reference to the erosion of the Ryan holding at Ballykenneally.
