Vol. 149 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Workers' Wage Position.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that, because of the serious financial position of the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway Company, the workers have over a number of years accepted voluntarily a wage below that paid to railway workers generally, and, if so, if he will provide the financial aid necessary to terminate this anomalous situation.

I am aware that because of the financial position of the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway Company the rates of wages of the company's employees in the State compare unfavourably with the rates paid to other railway workers. An application made by the company for an increase in the subsidy of £3,500 which is provided for in the Vote for my Department is under consideration and I hope shortly to be in a position to make a statement in the matter.
