Vol. 149 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the E.S.B. propose to carry out a canvass of the Erris and Ballycroy areas of North Mayo with a view to the extension of rural electrification thereto.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the development of this region under the rural electrification scheme will not be feasible until a transmission line is erected in conjunction with the turf-fired electricity generating station which is to be erected at Bangor Erris. The board consider that it would serve no useful purpose to canvass the householders at this stage.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Dunhill, Fenor and Kill areas, County Waterford, and, if so, when.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Dunhill area, which includes Fenor and Kill, has been considered for selection by the board on a number of occasions but has not so far been selected as the returns for the area have not compared favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Waterford district. The area will be reconsidered by the board and the decision of the board will depend on how the returns for the area compare with those of other areas awaiting development at the time.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Barraduff area, County Kerry.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that a canvass of the householders in the Barraduff area under the rural electrification scheme will be commenced very shortly. The area will be considered for development under the scheme when the results of the canvass are available. The decision on the selection of the area for development will depend largely on the response of the householders during the canvass.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the areas of Glynsk and Cashel, County Galway, embracing the townlands of Gowla, Callinacruck and Bunahowen, and, if so, when.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that these townlands are included in the Roundstone area which is at present being developed under the rural electrification scheme. I am also informed that, as most of the region is very sparsely populated, the extension of supply to these townlands with the exception of part of the town-land of Glynsk, involves consideration of special service charges which will be quoted to interested residents on application to the board.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give particulars of the E.S.B.'s priority list for West Galway.

I presume the Deputy does not wish to get particulars of areas to which priority has already been given and which have already been developed.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Roundstone area is at present being developed and that work will shortly commence in the Kilcoona area which has recently been selected for development. I am also informed that the areas of Letter-frack, Cornamona, Cleggan and Carraroe have been considered for selection but have not so far been found to be acceptable and that the Killanin area will be considered for selection in the near future. Areas not so far selected will be reconsidered later and the decision as to whether any particular area can be selected will depend on how the returns for that area compare with those for other areas still awaiting development in the Galway district.
