asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the number of gangers, foremen and timekeepers employed by the Forestry Branch of his Department in County Galway, (b) the rate of pay of each grade, and (c) how such rates of pay compare with those paid to equivalent grades employed by the Galway County Council.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Forestry Employees.
The Forestry Division has no employees of the grades indicated by the Deputy.
Head-labourers employed by the Forestry Division to take charge of gangs of men receive allowances varying from 5/- to 12/6 over and above the ordinary forestry labourer's rate. The number of head-labourers in County Galway at present is 35.
Labourers who are called upon to keep the time-books for short periods during the absence of the ordinary head-labourers or for a small group on detached duty are paid a small allowance therefor.
Comparison with gangers, etc., in county council employment is not possible. All forestry operations are closely supervised by the local forester and the duties and responsibilities of head-labourers, etc., are therefore limited.
