Vol. 149 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Number on Medical Register.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state, in respect of each health authority, (a) the estimated total population, and (b) the number of persons on the medical register under the Health Act, 1953, and the number of dependents of such persons, at the latest convenient date.

As the reply contains a long tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

The information contained in the following statement has been compiled from the returns furnished by local authorities during the past few weeks. It represents the position which existed up to about the middle of this month.

The compilation of the register has necessarily been slow. Local authorities had to arrange for the printing of application forms, etc., and to complete their arrangements for the investigation of the applications received. These arrangements have now been completed and the issue of medical cards is being speeded up in all areas. In the meantime persons who are entitled to general medical services and who have not received a medical card continue to obtain the necessary services under a "direction" given by an authorised person under article 16 of the General Medical Services Regulations, 1954.
