Vol. 149 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connemara Bridge Maintenance.

Seán Mac Eochagáin

asked the Minister for Finance whether his Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the bridge from the mainland to Muicineach Idir Dhá Sháile, County Galway, and, if so, why this necessary work is not being carried out.

I assume the bridge to which the Deputy refers is the footbridge over Camus Bay between the townlands of Muckanaghederdauhaulia and Kinvara, County Galway. I have no responsibility for the maintenance or repair of this bridge. Grants have, however, been sanctioned for its repair from moneys made available for the purpose of providing employment for men in receipt of unemployment assistance. The parapets of the bridge were, in fact, repaired last month. By the expenditure of these grants I did not incur any responsibility for the carrying out of any further work on the bridge or for the maintenance of the existing structure.

I wish to raise this question on the Adjournment.

I will communicate with the Deputy.
