Vol. 149 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Subsidy.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in detail the method of computing the subsidy payable to flour millers.

The amount of subsidy payable to flour millers is computed by determining, from the audited accounts submitted by millers, (1) the overall cost of making the quantity of flour produced and sold during the year; and (2) the total amount realised by the millers from sales of flour and wheaten offals.

The price of flour as fixed by Order is, of course, substantially below the full economic price. From the figures determined in the manner I have described it is possible to calculate the difference between the millers' actual receipts on the basis of the fixed price and the amount which they would receive if the flour were sold at its full economic price. This difference represents the amount payable to the millers by way of subsidy.
