Vol. 149 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tariff on Fish Imports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will impose a tariff on, or prohibit the importation of, fresh and salted herrings.

The importation of fresh herrings is at present controlled under the Fish (Regulation of Import) (No. 2) Order, 1938. The importation of salted herrings is governed by the terms of trade agreements made with other countries and discussions with the Governments concerned would be necessary before a change in the present position could be made. The position generally is being kept under review in my Department but I am not at present satisfied that there is any immediate need for a change in the existing arrangements.
