Vol. 150 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Carpets.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether British carpet manufacturers have been in correspondence with his Department concerning new carpets for Shannon Airport, and whether any commitment has been entered into with them; further, whether inquiries have been made from Irish carpet manufacturers to see if they are in a position to meet requirements in this case, and, if so, with what result.

I would refer the Deputy to the answer I gave to a previous question by him in Dáil Éireann on the 8th March concerning carpets for Shannon Airport. Correspondence has been received from British carpet manufacturers concerning the requirements at Shannon Airport, but there is no question of any commitment having been entered into with them. On the contrary, the intention is that Irish-made carpeting will be purchased provided certain requirements can be met, as I expect they can be. Inquiries have, in fact, been made from Irish carpet manufacturers as to quality and price, but negotiations have yet to be concluded on the precise specifications for the carpeting that is required.
