Vol. 150 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foreign Trawlers at Youghal.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that at a meeting of the Lismore, No. 4 district, fishery conservators on 24th February, 1955, a complaint was made that some 20 to 30 foreign trawlers operate every night in Youghal Bay within the three mile limit; that the officer commanding the naval depot, Haulbowline, was requested to have the area patrolled during the hours of darkness, and that, despite this officer's report that no fishing or fishing vessels were observed or detected on instruments, the conservators are satisfied that foreign trawlers are operating in Youghal Bay; and, if so, whether, in view of the detrimental effect such fishing has on our salmon fishing industry, he will have the matter investigated without delay.

I am aware of the complaint referred to in the Deputy's question and of the report of the officer commanding, naval depot, Haulbowline. The area in question has been, and is, regularly patrolled and I am informed that no illegal fishing by foreign trawlers has been detected. I can assure the Deputy that, consistent with the other obligations of the corvettes of the Naval Service, the area will continue to be kept under observation.
