Vol. 150 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Prices.

asked the Taoiseach the price per lb. of bacon in May, 1954, and May, 1955, respectively.

The available information relates to the prices ruling for certain cuts of bacon as returned at the quarterly consumer price index inquiry, and these were for May, 1954, in February, 1955, respectively: Irish streaky, 3/11¾ and 3/7½ per lb.; Irish shoulder, 2/6 and 2/4½ per lb., and pig's head, 1/1½ and 1/- per lb. The weighted average price per lb. of these cuts was 3/4¾ in May, 1954, and 3/1¼ in February, 1955. The corresponding information for mid-May, 1955, is not yet available.

Why did the Parliamentary Secretary give the price for February, 1955? If the price for May, 1955, was not available, why did he not give the price obtaining in April, 1955? Why go back to February, 1955?

My information is that the price for February is the latest figure available.
