Vol. 151 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Árus an Uachtaráin.

asked the Minister for Finance the total expenditure during the past ten years in respect of reconstruction work, extensions, adaptations, decorations, and furnishings of Árus an Uachtaráin.

The total expenditure during the period of ten years to the 31st March, 1955, was £192,926 13s. 4d. Of this, £99,249 6s. 4d. represents expenditure on the ordinary repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment, including painting, and on the upkeep of gardens and grounds and the wages of staff engaged on that duty and on gatekeeping.

The reply would seem to indicate that a sum of £100,000 was spent on work other than maintenance work. Does the Parliamentary Secretary think that that is justifiable expenditure on the residence in view of the fact that it is very difficult to get the commissioners to put in decent sanitary conditions in the cottages in the park for their own workers?

Is that question asked for information as to work done over the past ten years?

The other work has not been done.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary in a position to give any comparative figures in relation to the upkeep of Buckingham Palace?

Put down a question.

That is a separate question.
