Vol. 151 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that as from 16th May, 1955, the price of coal in Tralee has been increased by 15/- per ton, and, if so, whether his Department was consulted in the matter.

I am aware that coal prices increased recently in consequence, I understand, of an advance in the prices payable for coal by the importers and also because of an increase in the cross-Channel freight rates. At my request the Prices Advisory Body held a public inquiry into retail coal prices on 24th May, 1955. The report of the body in the matter will be considered by me in due course. Coal prices were released from statutory control in January, 1953, and since then there has been no obligation on the coal trade to consult the Department of Industry and Commerce about the prices they should charge for this commodity.
