Vol. 151 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he received proposals from the Meath County Council in connection with a water-supply scheme for the Julians-town-Gormanston area, and, if so, what is the present position in the matter.

No proposals for a water supply scheme for this area have been received.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, can he say if his Department is aware that, a couple of years ago, an arrangement was made with the proprietors of Butlin's Holiday Camp to pipe their supply along the whole east coast area affected and will he make inquiries to find out what happened to this scheme, after all these arrangements had been made and a lot of expense gone to?

I understand that, some years ago, the Meath County Council considered the possibility of undertaking a regional water supply scheme which would serve the Julianstown-Gormanston area. They did not proceed with that, however, and, instead they proceeded with a scheme at Duleek, and we have heard nothing further since.

That is right.

Is the Minister aware that the scheme had gone so far that prices had been arranged, and all arrangements made between the county council and the proprietors of the holiday camp, and that even the price which the holiday camp people were to pay for the water they needed had been fixed? Some public announcement should be made as to why the scheme was dropped or what happened in the meantime.

The information can be got from the Meath County Council.

Apparently it cannot.

It was they who failed to proceed. I know nothing further about the matter.

Meath County Council are quite clear on the matter.
