Vol. 151 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state, in respect of each county, the number of persons of Irish nationality known to have emigrated to countries other than Great Britain since 1st June, 1954.

The only information in regard to the subject of the Deputy's question is that which was circulated with the Official Report in reply to his question of 4th May, 1955.

The phrase "British and Irish passengers" is one which is generally in use on the manifests from which the information is derived. The figures supplied in answer to the Deputy's question refer exclusively to persons for whom the country of last permanent residence was shown to be the State. The totals shown could therefore include Irish residents of British nationality but the number of such persons may be regarded as negligible.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary mean to imply that the figures given for Great Britain and Ireland in the previous answer would mainly refer to the Twenty-Six Counties?

Absolutely. My information is that the number of persons of British nationality would be absolutely negligible.
