Vol. 151 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Athlone-Meelick Flooding.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the flooding which is at present taking place in the Athlone-Meelick area with the almost certain destruction of summer grazing and pasture, and if he will take due account of this second disaster in considering the necessity for alleviating the persons affected.

I am aware that there was a certain amount of flooding of low-lying land early this month in the area referred to by the Deputy, but I do not agree that any serious damage to pasture or meadow land has occurred. The question of alleviation of distress does not arise.

I would ask the Minister to request the Minister for Agriculture to reinvestigate the position in the area. I was assured only a few days ago that there was a considerable portion of the pasture and hay destroyed and that the position still demanded the Minister's attention.

They have a reply from the Galway County Committee of Agriculture. An inspection was carried out by an officer of that authority. He says:—

"I visited that district to-day and, in fact, travelled the Shannon area from Portumna to North of Meelick, including an area south of Meelick inside the E.S.B. embankments which were submerged last winter. I found no trace of flooding anywhere and I am perfectly satisfied there is none."

That is dated the 15th June.
