Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Customs and Excise Service Employment.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the number of men who are employed in the customs and excise service in Dublin as "extra men" (b) the weekly wages paid to them, and (c) whether there is any intention of increasing their wages and of effecting other improvements in the conditions of their employment.

(a) There are at present 31 men employed as extra men in the customs and excise service at Dublin port.

(b) They are paid at an inclusive rate of £4 19s. 9d. per week under 21 years of age and £5 13s. 4d. per week for age 21 years and over.

(c) Questions regarding the conditions of employment of extra men fall to be dealt with under the agreed scheme of conciliation and arbitration for the Civil Service.
