Vol. 153 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Garda Station.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will take steps to prevent the closing down of the Garda station at Quigley's Point, County Donegal.

The closing of the station to which the Deputy refers has been authorised. There is no serious crime in the sub-district and I am satisfied that the area can be adequately policed from adjoining stations.

Is the Minister aware that Quigley's Point Garda district, in which it is proposed to close the station, is a large one and that more than half that area will now be thrown on to Muff Garda district with the result that the work there will be increased? The fact is that they already have a Border station to contend with, two dance halls, a number of public houses and so on; if this further work is thrown on their shoulders it will be impossible for them to maintain the happy situation that now exists.

On the recommendation of the Garda superintendent and the Commissioner we decided to close this station. Muff is only five and a half miles away and there is no indictable crime in the area.

Muff being a Border district it is, I think, unfair to have extra work thrown on that particular district.

There is a squad car in that area and it can be brought into the other area in a few minutes.
