Vol. 153 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Generating Stations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is proposed to erect an electricity generating station in the Killarney area.

The present programme of the E.S.B. does not provide for a station in the Killarney area.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the turf generating station in South Kerry will be put into operation and whether there will be a guaranteed market for all turf produced by private enterprise in both North and South Kerry when the station is working.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the generating station in South Kerry is expected to be completed in the spring of 1957. Decisions regarding the procurement of turf supplies for the station and the areas from which they will be drawn are matters solely for the E.S.B. I would, however, refer the Deputy to the public announcement made by my predecessor on 7th February, 1953, in which it was stated that the station would require a minimum quantity of 30,000 tons of turf per annum and would thus provide an assured market for turf surplus to local needs which was produced in the area.
