Vol. 154 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - P.A.Y.E. for Government Employees.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider the propriety of introducing the P.A.Y.E. system of income-tax payments in respect of employees of Government Departments and local authorities, and if he will be prepared to sanction the adoption of the system by semi-State bodies such as Aer Lingus, the E.S.B., C.I.E., Bord na Móna and Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann, subject to the concurrence of the bodies concerned.

Employees of Government Departments and all other State employees are subject to statutory deductions of income-tax from current salaries and wages. Railway employees are in a similar position. In addition, voluntary schemes for deduction of tax from salaries and wages have been arranged in many cases between employers and employees with the agreement of the Revenue. Such schemes are in operation for a number of the bodies referred to by the Deputy. Where arrangements of this kind do not already exist the employers would, I am sure, be willing to consider establishing them if a majority of their workers so desired. The Deputy may take it that, in that event, the Revenue Commissioners would be glad to render all possible co-operation.
