Vol. 154 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Feale Drainage Scheme Workers—Medical Treatment.

asked the Minister for Finance what provisions are made for the provision of medical treatment for workers in the employment of the Office of Public Works on the Feale drainage scheme, who sustain injuries in the course of their employment.

The arrangements on the Feale are the same as on the other arterial drainage schemes, namely (1) first aid kits are readily available, (2) reasonable absence with pay is allowed to a worker who wishes to obtain medical treatment, (3) in a case of serious injury medical aid is summoned or the injured worker is conveyed to a doctor or to hospital.

I understand that up to some time ago provision was made whereby any worker injured on the job received medical treatment, but that that system was changed and now a worker has to look for and pay for his own doctor, even when he is injured on the job. Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether that is correct?

In answer to the first part of the Deputy's question, that was never the case.

I wonder would the Parliamentary Secretary look into it and inquire if that was the position and that there was an alteration recently?

It was explained to me to-day it was never the position.
