Vol. 154 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compulsory Purchase of Cork Lands.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the date on which the Cork County Council applied for a compulsory purchase order in relation to lands at Carrigrohane, County Cork, for the building of council houses, (b) the date of the inquiry, (c) whether he has yet received the inspector's report, and (d) when he expects to be in a position to inform the local authority of his decision.

An order for the compulsory acquisition of lands at Carrigrohanebeg was made by the Cork County Council on the 12th May, 1955, and submitted to my Department on the 18th May. The period set for the receipt of objections expired on the 4th June. The inquiry opened on the 6th July; it was adjourned to the 20th July and again, at the request of the parties concerned, to the 10th August. On this latter date the inspector, on reopening the adjourned inquiry, was informed that the council and the land owner had arranged for the acquisition by agreement of a suitable alternative site. It is understood that the parties are at present negotiating on the question of compensation. Pending the outcome of these negotiations, the making of a decision on the compulsory purchase order has been deferred.

Does the Minister know that the local authorities are not aware that such is the position and would he notify local authorities of that? Otherwise, they will be awaiting a decision which they believe is to be made by the Minister himself.

I hope the reply to the Deputy's question will be brought to their notice.
