Vol. 154 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oughterard Lead Mines.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is proposed to reopen the lead mines at Glengolla, Oughterard, and, if so, when; further, whether a survey of this area has been made, and, if so, with what result.

The mineral deposits in the Glengolla area have been surveyed already by the Geological Survey. The results of the surveys, which are made available to interested parties, would not justify the undertaking of any further work in the area at State expense. The Deputy will appreciate that the reopening of mines such as these is a matter for private enterprise and I will be prepared to grant any necessary facilities under the Minerals Development Act, 1940, in relation to the Glengolla mines to an applicant who can satisfy the customary conditions as to financial and technical resources. I may add that I have not before me at present any proposals for the reopening of these mines.
