Vol. 155 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Cork Afforestation.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the present position in relation to the total amount of land being acquired in South Cork for afforestation purposes, and (b) the districts concerned.

I must inform the Deputy that the amount of time and expense involved in extracting information to deal with a question relating to a large portion of a county would not be justified and in the circumstances I trust that it will be sufficient if I supply relevant figures for County Cork as a whole.

Since 1st April, 1955, my Department has acquired 26 areas totalling 3,344 acres in County Cork for afforestation purposes. Offers of 72 other areas totalling 7,334 acres have been accepted and the legal formalities are in course of completion. In addition, negotiations have been opened for the purchase of 98 areas totalling about 6,000 acres and 449 offers totalling about 28,000 acres are at the preliminary investigation stage.
