Vol. 155 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inshore Fishermen's Unemployment Benefit.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the consultations between his Department and the Department of Agriculture in regard to the amendment of Article 7 of the Social Welfare (Modifications of Insurance) Regulations, 1953, to permit the payment of unemployment benefit to share fishermen have yet been completed; if so, with what result, and, if not, what is the cause of the delay.

Consultations between my Department and the Department of Agriculture in regard to the matter referred to in the Deputy's question have not been completed. As previously stated very important issues are involved and extensive inquiries were essential. Consideration of the matter has now reached an advanced stage and it is hoped to arrive at a decision at an early date.

This matter was discussed on a motion in this House. That motion finished on the 2nd March of last year, which is just 12 months ago. The Minister then made a statement that he would discuss the matter with the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance.

Has the Deputy a supplementary question to put?

I want to know whether that discussion has taken place.

Consultations have been going on between my Department and the Department of Agriculture. It was found difficult to get the information as between part time employment and full time employment, but we have got that information now. I hope to give a decision at a very early date.

Would it be three months before that decision is given?

I would not say so.

Would the Minister say how long the regulation has been in force?

There is no regulation there.

There is.

Has the Minister sought the assistance of An Bord Iascaigh Mhara?

I have. I am considering the whole matter now.
